Grant Date: 8/1/08
To look at this handsome
fellow, you'd never know what he's been through.
His owners originally contacted
Cocker
Companions Rescue hoping to surrender him.
Unfortunately, before he could even make it into rescue,
the poor fellow was hit by a car. Surgery was
required to repair Tucker's fractured pelvic bone. A
grant from CARA provided the funds necessary to help
Tucker move on to a new life.

successful surgery done on August 13th and is doing
beautifully. He is weight bearing and the perfect little

in her forever home.

Grant Date: 1/27/08
American Cocker Spaniel Rescue in Spanaway, Washington,
took in Cocco after a good samaritan found him abandoned and
wandering the streets on his own. Cocco suffered from
violent seizures that required testing to determine the
cause. Cocco had a sweet disposition that charmed
everyone, but until the seizures could be controlled he
could not be adopted.

and he has a wonderful forever family that loves him very

Grant Date: 12/10/07

desperate need of help. Sara and Max were dropped off
together at an animal shelter in the middle of the night -

partially blind. Princess was abandoned by her family at a

realize she required cataract surgery as well if she was to
have any hope of seeing again. ARF's goal was to
restore at least partial sight to max, Sara, and Princess.
UPDATE: All three
adorable dogs have moved on to forever homes where they are
loved and spoiled . . . as all cockers should be.
Lucy Lou
Grant Date: 10/27/07
Lucy Lou came into rescue after being picked up as a stray.
Weighing in at 60 pounds, she was seriously overweight and
was overlooked by all rescues as unadoptable. Once in
foster care, a simple blood test showed the weight was due
to an inactive thyroid which could be treated with
inexpensive medication. She was later diagnosed with
Lymphoma. A CARA grant paid for Lucy's lymphoma
treatments in full. Read more
on Lucy here.
UPDATE: Lucy enjoyed
an additional five months of a happy, pain-free life here on

Lucy, Billie, Annie
Grant Date: 11/2/06

These three came to
Cocker Pals
Rescue in need of lots of love and medical attention.
Lucy has dwarfism of the legs and was considered unadoptable
by other groups. Her human mother of 10 years became
ill and could no longer care for her and Cocker Pals stepped
up to the challenge to find her a loving home. Billie
is a blind girl who came from a rural farm in PA, where her
guide was a goat with a bell around its neck. Annie
came from a neglectful home and requires surgery to help
decrease the pressure behind her eye as a result of
glaucoma. To learn more about Lucy, Billie, and Annie,
UPDATE: Thanks to
assistance from CARA, all three girls have been fully vetted
and have found their adoptive families. A chemical ablation
was performed on Annie's eyes to prevent further pain,
Billie is enjoying the world as a sighted dog once more, and
Lucy has found a new family to dote on her.
Belle
Grant Date: 7/13/06

One of the joys of CARA is being able to help
those rescue groups that have taken in dogs missed by
other groups and individuals. These rescue groups fly
below the radar, quietly coming along to take in those dogs that
other groups must leave behind - the special needs and senior
dogs. Belle is such a cocker spaniel and Lucky Dog Rescue
is one of those silent friends. Belle's lifelong owner has
entered a nursing home and her son, rather than keep Belle,
decided to put her down. Belle is blind, which made
her unadoptable in the eyes of most people but not in the eyes
of Arlene with
Lucky Dog
Rescue. Arlene took her in and soon realized Belle was facing a
serious problem. A tumor has been growing in Belle's ear and it
requires immediate surgery. Belle requires a lateral ear
bisection and it will take place as soon as the funds are
raised. Belle's veterinarian, touched by the generosity of so
many strangers reaching out to help, has donated a significant
portion of the cost of the surgery. To read more about
Belle's story, click here.

Simone
Grant Date: 5/25/06

Simone
was left at a shelter by her family when they moved.
Being left behind by a family is hard for any dog,
but particularly hard for Simone - Simone is blind
due to juvenile cataracts.
To go from a warm home with a family to a cold,
noisy shelter was especially frightening for this
little one.
Cocker Pals stepped in to help Simone and found
her a safe, warm foster home with lots of love. They
also set up an appointment at Cornell University to see if
they could restore this young girl's sight. Although Simone
is not a candidate for this surgery as originally hoped, she
remains sweet and loving and waits patiently for her forever
home.

Vinnie
Grant Date: 4/10/06
Vinnie, with Second Chance Cocker Rescue in
Santa Barbara, CA, was involved in a car accident that left him

in his foster home recovering from his surgery and making great
progress. With support from cocker friends like you, it's
impossible to keep a good boy like Vinnie down.

left her behind. Jasmine developed glaucoma in one
eye, and she had Chemical Ablation to relieve the
pain. She also had some mammary tumors which needed

Cosette
Grant Date: 05/21/05
Cosette was
left in a shelter in California. This girl was
tugging at Ann Summers heart from Cocker
Connection in Newbury Park, CA. Ann very much
wanted to rescue this sweet-natured little
8-year-old, buff and white cocker girl who was
doomed in the LA shelter system (South LA, and
in the treatment area--not open to the public).
She had been there since the 11th of May, and
she has a mammary tumor, possibly pre-pyometra
and an inguinal hernia, so she was going to need
some serious surgery. She was also filthy, has
fleas and ticks. CARA was able to send a
monetary grant for Cosette's expensive care. She
is still at the Vet's receiving medical
attention but Ann can not wait to finally get
her home into foster care. We Thank Ann for
being willing to rescue this little girl and
give her the medical attention that she needs.

|
Cosette quietly went to the Bridge on 11/25/05.
She was dearly loved and will be missed.

Carson
Grant Date: 04/16/05
Carson is a darling chocolate
cocker spaniel who is only 5 years old. Like
many cockers, Carson has had waged a lifelong
struggle with painful, chronic ear infections.
Although Cocker Spaniel Rescue of
Austin/San Antonio has tried medication, steroid
shots, antibiotics, and daily cleaning, Carson
will need to undergo a painful, serious surgery
called total ear canal ablation in both of his
ears.
|
The surgery is costly in terms of long-term side
effects (like hearing loss) and possible
complications. Recovery from each surgery
usually takes 1 to 1 1/2 months. Based on their
experience, they are convinced that this is the
best thing to do for Carson. After recovery, he
should have a full, happy and pain-free life.
Please visit Carson's webpage for more
information.

from Mid-South Cocker Rescue in Memphis, TN.

diagnosed with auto-immune Anemia. He had to
have a blood transfusion and IV antibiotics with
round the clock care.

"Tears in Heaven"
Unfortunately after all the
efforts of a wonderful Vet and the love of
Stephanie, Patches went to the bridge on 4/13/2005.
This is just one of the dogs that CARA has been able
to send a monetary grant to help in his care.

of a CARA grant. Her needs were
brought to our attention by Second
Chance Cocker Spaniel Rescue of

pain in her ears from chronic ear
infections and required a Total Ear
Canal Ablation surgery to relieve that
pain, CARA was able to assist by
awarding a grant which helped in the
cost of the surgery. Now Rosie lives a
life without pain. |

Here is a picture of Rosie and her new family. This
picture is at the "Birthday" party they had for
Rosie when she arrived at her new home. They are
wonderful people and love her very much.
